Insulation Resistance (IR)
IR testing is used to measure the resistance of the insulating material of a component. The material can range from the glass seals of a metal package to the dielectric material of a capacitor. Since these insulators are often crucial to the function of the device, being able to confirm their insulating properties with IR testing is invaluable. The test is often performed as part of a sequence of environmental stresses to ensure the robustness of the insulating material of the package.
IR testing is performed by applying a relatively high voltage and measuring the resulting current, known as leakage current.
ORS is certified to perform IR testing to MIL-STD-883 method 1003.
